Intern Fish Joins Our Pond!

With a degree in Business and Marketing, the opportunity to gain first-hand experience at Ministry of Fish and apply my academic learning in a real-world setting was one I was incredibly eager to take. The internship offered me the chance to gain exposure and insights from all departments, undertake informed analysis of existing social content and copy and then create and refine my own content strategy - though I’m still working on breathing underwater!

My interest in the industry originated from a fascination for branding, consumer psychology, and brand positioning. Apple’s shiny, premium product advertising and stores drew me in, Formula 1 reignited my love for anything fast and high‑octane, and Red Bull… well, they were at every intersection of sport and danger.

My internship began by analysing Ministry of Fish’s Instagram and LinkedIn feeds to gauge purpose, intended audience and message of the posts. I studied existing graphics and illustrations for inspiration. I then began working on new ideas informed by insights from discussions with each function. Following on, I then selected the best ideas for further development which would make up my 8-week content calendar.

After refining visual content with Studio, I presented them to the Account Management and Digital teams for feedback and approval. This helped ensure the Ministry of Fish tone and visual direction were accurately captured. My initial idea for International Women’s Day evolved into individual ‘spotlight’ interviews on everyone in the Ministry of Fish team. It focused on their career challenges, journey and incorporated questions on things outside their professional world. This idea was also well-received as it could be reformatted into a headshot photo and text caption format, rather than video interview.

As my time (unfortunately!) came to a conclusion, I constructed a PowerPoint presentation detailing all my initial content and copy ideas as the brief called for. I then continued on to my 8 most relevant and impactful social media ideas broken down into detail including post format and platforms that they would be posted on with supporting rationale. The entire document adhered to brand visual guidelines across typography, images, colour scheme and presentation layout.

Finally, I delivered that presentation to the social media marketing team at Ministry of Fish. I’ve learned a lot from everyone during my time as an intern, and that translated into my notes, supporting work and culminating piece. I continue my search for my first opportunity into the marketing world, now armed with a great deal of knowledge and exposure. It’s time for me to swim onwards - a massive thanks to everyone at Ministry of Fish. It’s been a splash!
